In Loving Memory of Victor Smolen (1925–2025)
Founder of Smolen Emr Ilkovitch Architects | Est. 1959
We are deeply saddened to share the passing of Victor Smolen, a visionary Architect, devoted teacher, moral mentor, and true gentleman. As the founding force behind Smolen Emr Ilkovitch Architects, Victor laid the groundwork for a practice that has shaped communities, inspired generations, and stood as a benchmark of thoughtful, human-centered design.
More than an Architect, Victor was an Artist—bringing beauty, intention, and integrity to every space he touched. As a leader, he guided with humility and strength. As a teacher, he gave generously of his time and wisdom. As a man, he embodied grace, intellect, and moral clarity.
Victor's legacy lives on in every line drawn, every building that stands, and in the countless lives he influenced with compassion and conviction. He will be deeply missed, but never forgotten.
Rest well, Victor. Your vision endures.
A Tribute from President Ran Ilkovitch
I was truly blessed to have Victor Smolen as a mentor early in my career. As our founder and president, he was a strong, courteous, and fair leader who always made it clear how deeply he cared for us and how much he wanted us to succeed.
Victor taught me so much more than architecture. Through his actions, he instilled in me a deep sense of humility, a drive for uncompromising excellence, and the importance of treating people with fairness, justice, and moral clarity.
Even after his retirement, Victor visited the office often. He loved to check in at every desk, connect with every person, and see what everyone was working on. He was always so excited and impressed by the work we were doing, and by what the little firm he started had grown into. The energy in the office always lifted when he came by. You could feel the pride he had in us. He used to say we gave him nachas—that beautiful Yiddish word for the joy and deep satisfaction one feels when someone they care about achieves something meaningful. It’s more than just pride; it’s soulful, rooted in love. He truly loved us all, and we knew it.
Victor was a true mensch—a man of integrity, kindness, and wisdom. His presence helped shape who I am, and his legacy lives on in all of us who had the honor to learn from him—and in those who continue the work of the firm he founded. I am forever indebted. My greatest aspiration is to have a similar impact on the young people who will carry the firm into the future, just as Victor had on me.
Rest well, Victor. And thank you—for everything.
