SEI expanded and modified Calvert County
Public Schools’ Career and Technology Academy to accommodate its growing
programs. Our design reorganized the facility to serve three distinct
functions.
The "L" shaped addition was designed
to enclose a naturally lit atrium simulating a true commercial work
environment. Programs around the commercial atrium included cosmetology, food
preparation, graphic arts, computer drafting, nursing, engineering,
electronics, computer repair, data processing, radio station, career
assessment, job placement, and administration.
The remainder of the existing building was
high volume spaces and was renovated to serve all industrial and construction
trades. Central to this design was the general construction program.
Surrounding this high volume general area are all construction related trades
including masonry, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and machining. Students
can now chose programs to experience all trades or specialize in any one of the
adjacent disciplines.
A new building was constructed to accommodate
the automotive and welding program. The automotive program featured ASE
certification for mechanics, small engine repair and a state-of-the-art auto body
repair and paint program.
The Calvert Career and Technology Academy is a
unique facility as it teaches the students life skills and trades while
simultaneously serving the community who use the functions.
