Severna Park Middle School had always been a
community school and a beacon of community activities. When the building was
slated for replacement, the community opposed its demolition to save the
building and its special features that they grew up with.
In deference to the community, SEI designed a
project which renovated and reprogrammed the entire existing facility and
accommodated additional program through seven targeted additions. The solution
met all program needs, improved building circulation, and resulted in a
completely state-of-the-art facility which appears and operates as a brand new
middle school would. The project was featured for its integration of technology
as a model for 21st century learning by the National Middle School Association
at their National Convention.
As a reflection of the community, many of whom
are Naval Academy Graduates from nearby Annapolis, the design of the school
embodies the metaphor of a ship at sea. Nautical design elements included the
metal prow at the entrance and undulation of masonry representing a ship at
sea, acoustical waves in the ceiling of the cafeteria, and the nautical compass
pattern in the terrazzo floor in the lobby among others.
